At 8:21 AM ET this morning, The U.S. Navy Yard in southeast Washington D.C. heard 3 shots go off. City police is still on the hunt for the shooter, the Washington Post reports. It is unclear how many were hurt at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building; the Washington Post says 3 or 4 were shot, including a D.C. police officer. Above is reportedly a photo of an injury from the scene of a shooting in Washington.

He looked over at me, and I looked at him. He just panned his gun and trained it on me, and I just jumped behind the building and he shot at me. …[He was] looking around for targets very casually… He just looked like he was standing there posing for the cover of an ammo magazine or something. It was bizarre.
Santa Monica College employee Joe Orcutt • Describing his brief, dangerous encounter with the gunman that descended onto Santa Monica College’s campus yesterday. According to an anonymous law enforcement source, the gunman had allegedly been hospitalized for mental health issues a couple years ago after talking about harming somebody, though whether this was a voluntary hospitalization is yet unknown. He has not yet been identified by authorities; he was shot dead by police following the spree, which left four people dead. source

Shots fired in Denver’s Civic Center after pot rally, 2 shot 
Denver Post: Two people were shot in Denver’s Civic Center during Saturday’s 4/20 pot rally. A man and a woman were both shot in the leg and taken to the hospital, according to police. Neither of their injuries were life-threatening.
Organizers predicted around 80,000 attendees at Saturday’s gathering in Denver. The celebration was the first since Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana for recreational use.

We just mentioned a few hours ago that security was being put in place for Denver’s first ever legal 4/20 gathering, and now this news comes across the wire. Simply awful.

Four dead and four wounded in attack on Afghan police station

  • two American soldiers and two Afghan police officers were killed in Afghanistan’s Wardak province on Monday, after a member of the local police force opened fire on soldiers and officers at a compound in Jalrez district. 
  • four Afghan police officers were also wounded in the fighting before return fire claimed the attacker’s life. The gunman was apparently a local police officer as well.
  • five officers are being held for questioning by American officials following Monday’s attack, though authorities haven’t revealed potential leads on possible backers/motive at this time. source

Orange County gunman/carjacker kills three

  • 3people killed by 20-year-old Ali Syed, who embarked on a spree of violent carjackings in Orange County early this morning. Syed, who killed an unidentified young woman in his parents’ home, then stole their SUV. He would subsequently hijack three other vehicles, shoot two more people dead, and badly wound two others. He committed suicide just as police were arriving to confront him. source

10-year-old anti-terrorism legislation used for the first time in Washington D.C.

  • 2002 Washington D.C. passes the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2002 which establishes a number of terror-related crimes in the U.S. capital. 
  • 2012 Virginia resident Floyd Lee Corkins infamously enters the Family Research Council headquarters in Washington D.C. with several firearms, but is wrestled to the ground by building manager Leo Johnson before he could take a single life. He later claimed that his goal was to intimidate gay rights opponents, and he planned to smear Chick-fil-A sandwiches in the faces of potential victims.
  • 2013 The law is used for the first time as Corkins pleads guilty to committing an act of terrorism while armed, interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition, and assault with intent to kill while armed. source
