We just mentioned a few hours ago that security was being put in place for Denver’s first ever legal 4/20 gathering, and now this news comes across the wire. Simply awful.
Greek police were hunting three foremen on Thursday who were suspected of shooting and wounding more than 20 migrant workers at a strawberry farm.
The supervisors were believed to have opened fire on Wednesday at a crowd of about 200 mostly Bangladeshi immigrants who were demanding wages that had not been paid, police said. The wounded were taken to hospital but none of the injuries was serious.
Anti-foreigner sentiment has been rising in Greece, where one in four workers is unemployed after five years of recession.
We’re glad to hear that all of the wounded are expected to survive, but this is a pretty troubling story given the recent in-roads being made by Greek political organizations like Golden Dawn, Obviously, such organizations don’t represent the majority opinion in Greece, but a noted rise in anti-immigrant violence is always worth keeping an eye on.
Las Vegas police are looking for a black Range Rover after a sudden burst of gunshots and a car fire led to the deaths of three people on the famed Strip, shutting down the gambling boulevard in several directions.
A Range Rover Sport with black rims and tinted windows pulled up to a Maserati at a stoplight at the intersection of Las Vegas and Flamingo Boulevards around 4:20 a.m. Thursday, Sgt. John Sheahan of the Las Vegas Police Department said.
Early reports indicated that guns were fired from both the Range Rover and the victims’ Maserati; however, police say there is no evidence that the second vehicle’s occupants fired a weapon of any kind. In addition to the three casualties, three additional victims were treated and released from a local hospital for minor injuries, and a fourth remains at the medical facility for additional treatment.
At least three people were shot and wounded when gunfire erupted at a business complex in Phoenix on Wednesday, and authorities were combing the area for the suspected gunman, police said on Wednesday.
Phoenix Police spokesman James Holmes said the people who were shot were taken from the scene to a local hospital, and there was no immediate word on their condition.
While police continue to look for the suspect, law enforcement officials have confirmed that there were no deaths as a result of today’s shooting. The timing of today’s attack will likely be dissected at great length in the days ahead, with the shooting occurring at roughly the same time that former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords testified before the Senate on gun violence.
Update: There are now 5 confirmed injuries from the attack, three of which were life-threatening for the victims, though none of the victims have died at this time.
4people killed in a shooting at a townhome in Aurora, Colorado, including the gunman. The police attempted to negotiate with armed assailant, still barricaded inside the home for hours this morning, until he fired on police, prompting a raid that left him dead at around 9 AM. Three other adults in the home were found dead. This is no doubt a grim and evocative incident for the people of Aurora, the same Colorado town in which a brutal shooting during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises last year, gripping national attention. source
Nation set to observe moment of silence for Newtown victims
At 9:30 a.m. EST, many people in the United States are joining Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy’s call for a moment of silence to remember the victims of last week’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
NBC News reports thousands of churches are set to ring their bells 26 times at 9:30 a.m.

As it turns out, she was not a teacher. Nor does it appear that Nancy Lanza had been a substitute or a teacher’s aide at Sandy Hook Elementary School, as some reported. Other accounts said incorrectly that she had been killed at the school along with her students, rather than at home before her son’s rampage at the school. The Washington Post’s Paul Farhi • From an article today detailing the mistaken narratives and misinformation that sprung forth in the early hours after the Sandy Hook shooting, and how those mistakes can persist. This is not the first time we’ve seen so much bad information swarm a tragic incident, or even a school shooting — reports of motive in the aftermath of the Columbine shooting have also since proven dubious (perhaps explained best by Columbine author Dave Cullen). source
The National Rifle Association broke its silence over the Newton, Connecticut mass shooting on Tuesday, releasing a statement announcing a “major news conference” this week where it could offer “meaningful contributions” to prevent future massacres.
The NRA had been in virtual silence since the grisly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, but now has released this statement, teasing some level of increased participation on the topic. What will this mean? It’s hard to say. But this at least hints at a step that’s invariably relevant, if not crucial, should any form of gun control conversation occur — the NRA coming to the table in good faith.
Dick’s Sporting Goods suspends sale of certain semi-automatics
CNN:
Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, says it has removed all guns from its store nearest to Newtown, Connecticut, and is suspending the sale of certain kinds of semi-automatic rifles from its chains nationwide.
The move was made out of respect for the victims and families of last week’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting “during this time of national mourning,” the store said in a statement Tuesday morning.Photo: An American flag at the center of Newtown, Connecticut, stands at half-staff on Dec. 14.
