Gunfire erupted on Thursday at a California high school in inland Kern County in a shooting in which two people were injured, county officials said, and media reports indicated the assailant had been arrested.
A Kern County sheriff’s dispatcher confirmed the shooting at Taft Union High School but gave no other details, and the county fire chief said two people had been wounded, including one who was airlifted to a nearby hospital. The other refused treatment.
We’re glad to hear that nobody was killed in today’s shooting, and our thoughts remain with the two injured in today’s attack. One of the two people who were shot (believed to be a student) was airlifted to a Bakersfield hospital, though law enforcement officials have not released any additional information on either victim’s condition.

CNN:
Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, says it has removed all guns from its store nearest to Newtown, Connecticut, and is suspending the sale of certain kinds of semi-automatic rifles from its chains nationwide.
The move was made out of respect for the victims and families of last week’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting “during this time of national mourning,” the store said in a statement Tuesday morning.Photo: An American flag at the center of Newtown, Connecticut, stands at half-staff on Dec. 14. ‘We can’t tolerate this anymore’: Obama signals action over gun laws
He spoke for a nation in sorrow, but the slaughter of all those little boys and girls left President Barack Obama, like so many others, reaching for words. Alone on a spare stage after the worst single day of his presidency, the commander in chief was a parent in grief.
“I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depth of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts,” Obama said at an evening vigil in the grieving community of Newtown, Conn. “I can only hope that it helps for you to know that you are not alone in your grief.”
The massacre of 26 children and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday elicited horror around the world, soul-searching in the United States, fresh political debate about gun control and questions about the incomprehensible — what drove the suspect to act.
“Can say that we’re truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose? I’ve been reflecting on this the last few days,” Obama said, somber and steady as some in the audience wept.

The next few weeks are going to be interesting, with Obama playing the comforter-in-chief.

It’s somewhat unavoidable that the perpetrators of terrible crimes like these get a lot of notoriety attached to their names. It’s a worthy remembrance, conversely, to take note of the names of these victims.
Our investigators… did produce some very good evidence in this investigation that our investigators will be able to use in, hopefully, painting the complete picture as to how, and more importantly why, this occurred.Connecticut State Police Lieutenant, Paul Vance • Speaking at a news conference on the police investigation into the horrific school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut yesterday. The question of why the shooter, identified by police to have been 20-year-old Adam Lanza, chose to perform this unspeakable crime will understandly dominate the public’s attention, but we urge caution pending official investigations like the one listed above. As highlighted in Dave Cullen’s Columbine, initial impressions and narratives about motive formed after tragedies like these can prove quite erroneous. source
