What’s the thinking behind this? Is the RNC banking on a complete rehabilitation of W’s image, or are they trying to usher in such a rehabilitaiton themselves? Why does the tone of the sticker seem vaguely sarcastic?  We’re as stumped as you. source

  • action Yesterday, Mother Jones released secretly-recorded audio of GOP strategist Frank Luntz criticizing right-wing talk show hosts during a talk with College Republicans at the University of Pennsylvania. “They get great ratings, and they drive the message, and it’s really problematic. And this is not on the Democratic side. It’s only on the Republican side,” Luntz said.
  • reaction “I’m very disappointed that at Penn, [the] trust between students and speaker is gone,” said Luntz, an former student and professor at the school, after the release of the audio. ”Call me naive, but I thought it was possible to have an open, honest conversation about American politics and not make it a national conversation.”
  • rebuttal “The Penn environment should be one in which people are encouraged and expected to speak unencumbered by self-interest,” wrote Aakash Abbi, the student who recorded the speech. ”If influential GOP figures like Frank Luntz truly believe that the party’s media kingmakers harm the national interest but refuse to say so for fear of backlash, they knowingly work against the spirit of open and honest debate.”

There’s also a question of journalistic ethics. Luntz requested that the remarks remain off the record; while a journalist who was in the room verbally agreed to this request, Abbi (who isn’t a journalist) and Mother Jones (who wasn’t present) did not. So are they still bound by it? Does a request to remain off the record amount to a decree, or must it be agreed to? Regardless of where you stand, it’s a fuzzy area. Meanwhile, Luntz has withdrawn a scholarship in his father’s name since the remarks leaked.

We’re going to be announcing a $10 million initiative just this year and it will include hundreds of people, paid across the country, from coast-to-coast, in Hispanic and African-American, Asian communities, talking about our party, talking about our brand, talking about what we believe in.
RNC head Reince Priebus • Discussing the RNC’s efforts to improve its image amongst minorities by increasing its outreach big time. Part of the reason for doing it now, rather than during an election year, is because the party found it was playing catch-up by only focusing on such efforts in the months leading up to the election. “We have become a party that parachutes into communities four months before an election,” Priebus said. “In comparison to the other side, the Obama campaign lived in these communities for years. The relationships were deep, they were authentic.” Priebus’ comments come two days after the party suffered a black eye on the diversity front—a controversial incident at CPAC involving a white supremacist group.

breakingnews:

Obama calls automatic spending cuts ‘dumb’; blames GOP
NBC News: President Barack Obama said the “dumb” automatic across-the-board cuts going into effect today are the fault of Republican resistance to a reasonable deal to avert the sequestration’s budget reductions.

“I know that this has been some of the conventional wisdom that’s been floating around Washington,” Obama told reporters after meeting with congressional leaders. “Even though most people agree that I’m being reasonable, that most people agree that I am presenting a fair deal —  the fact that [Republicans] don’t take it means that I should somehow do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what’s right,” he said.

Earlier, Obama met with House Speaker John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.

In a brief statement to reporters after the meeting, Boehner reiterated that Republicans will continue to oppose Democratic proposals to raise new revenues to offset the cuts.

Bring it on, Karl baby. Bring it on, doughboy. Bring on your little whiteboard.
Leading conservative Mark Levin on fellow leading conservative Karl Rove. The remark is emblematic of the civil war brewing in the GOP: On the one side are pragmatists like Rove, who believe the Republican Party needs to nominate more moderate candidates in order to win elections; on the other side are idealists like Levin, who would rather see radical right-wingers lose elections than moderate Republicans win ‘em. The Tea Party contingent of the GOP is outraged at Rove’s newly-unveiled Conservative Victory Project, which seeks to intervene in Republican primaries to make sure that would-be Todd Akins don’t wind up with the nomination. source

A debate about which party can better manage the federal government is a very small and short-sighted debate. If our vision is not bigger than that, we do not deserve to win.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal • In a speech he plans to give to the Republican National Committee Thursday evening, during which he will use the phrase “recalibrate the compass of conservatism.” Jindal sounds like he’s running for president in 2016, and also like he’s hoping to score an era-defining speech akin to Rush Limbaugh’s defiant bit at 2009’s CPAC. Jindal’s response to the State of the Union that year didn’t get a lot of love from anyone, but he’s otherwise proven himself to be one of the country’s best Republican governors, so it’ll be interesting to see what sort of bandwidth he gets from this speech.

He wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life. He had no desire to … run. If he could have found someone else to take his place … he would have been ecstatic to step aside. He is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them, but he has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesn’t love the attention.
Tagg Romney • Discussing his father Mitt, who he had to convince with his mother, Ann, to run for president. Tagg made the comment in a long post-mortem article written by the Boston Globe’s Michael Kranish, which pinpoints what, exactly, happened. The biggest problem, according to the Globe report? The campaign did very little to focus on Romney’s personal and leadership strengths — and Obama’s campaign was much better at reaching individual voters than Romney’s. A great Sunday morning read.

This was an instruction packet that went out to 30,000+ people. Did no one proof-read it?
Ace of Spades HQ contributor John Ekdahl • Discussing his experience as an attempted Republican poll watcher on Tuesday — and in the process noting the failings of the party’s “Project Orca,” which was designed to modernize the process of election “strike lists,” but ended up only frustrating supporters. Ekdahl says that he didn’t have a “poll watcher certificate” — something that wasn’t listed as being necessary in his instruction packet — and was turned away. And the problem was widespread, too, he found. “People had been kicked from poll watching for having no certificate. Others never received their pdf packets. Some were sent the wrong packets from a different area. Some received their packet, but their usernames and passwords didn’t work,” he explains. If this is the case, the party may have had some major organizational problems on Election Day.

cognitivedissonance:

I interviewed Meghan McCain at the RNC in Tampa August 28. Topics included the War on Women, Todd Akin, and the perception of women in the political sphere. McCain also discussed the pressures of being a commentator who’s always in the public eye, and women’s sometimes distorted body image. We also touched on why it’s dangerous for the GOP to seek ideological purity over Ronald Reagan’s big tent.

— Meg

Great interview by Meg, who is one of the Tumblr users that had a chance to visit the RNC this year.

  • what The Republican National Convention will swap the times of some of its speakers to give potential first lady Ann Romney a Tuesday night speaking time.
  • why Stupid TV networks weren’t being cooperative, choosing to put mostly reruns during Romney’s original speaking time — 10:30 p.m. Monday evening. source

» Not making an appearance? Joe Biden: Days after the Democratic vice president scheduled a politically-unprecedented visit to Tampa to coincide with the other party’s convention, he cancelled it “due to disaster preparedness and local security concerns” regarding the potentially-damaging Hurricane Isaac, according to the Obama campaign. The convention is still on despite the oncoming hurricane, by the way.

Which candidates will appear on the ballot in Utah?
Newt Gingrich may not make the ballot in Utah, after the check for his $500 ballot fee bounced. Utah Elections Director Mark Thomas confirmed that, after receiving the candidate’s paperwork and check in March, the state was recently contacted by the bank to notify them of the bounce. The state has apparently made multiple attempts to contact Gingrich, and have now given the candidate an April 20th deadline for the payment. Should they not hear from Gingrich in the next 8 days, he’ll be removed from the ballot. (Photo by Don Irvine Photos) source

I cannot predict what will happen in the future, but I know that I have got the fire in my belly to try to help, to try to make a difference and if that involves running for public office at some point in the future, I’m game for that.
Fox News analyst Sarah Palin • Continuing her long-running game of chicken with the idea of a future run for public office. Palin did not fully deny that she would jump into the presidential race if necessary. Sarah Palin may not be running for president, but she’s not entirely opposed to the idea either. In an interview Wednesday, she noted that she would “do whatever I could to help” in case the Republican party does not have a clear frontrunner by this summer.  source (viafollow)
