It’s a major metropolitan area run by armed teenagers with no access to jobs or healthy food, and not long ago, while the rest of America was ranting about debt ceilings and Obamacares, Camden quietly got pushed off the map. That was three years ago, when new governor and presumptive future presidential candidate Chris Christie abruptly cut back on the state subsidies that kept Camden on life support. The move left the city almost completely ungoverned – a graphic preview of what might lie ahead for communities that don’t generate enough of their own tax revenue to keep their lights on. Over three years, fires raged, violent crime spiked and the murder rate soared so high that on a per-capita basis, it ‘put us somewhere between Honduras and Somalia,’ says Police Chief J. Scott Thomson
Rolling Stone publishes a piece on Camden, New Jersey, a town they call “America’s most desperate town.”

Hidden away in offices of various government departments, intelligence agencies, police forces and armed forces are dozens and dozens of people who are very much upset by what our societies are turning into: at the very least, turnkey tyrannies. One of them is you.
Former whistleblowers Peter Kofod, Thomas Drake, Daniel Ellsberg, Katharine Gun, Jesselyn Radack, Ray McGovern, Coleen Rowley write in an open letter to intelligence employees after Snowden’s revelations.

Latest Healthcare.gov stats look better, still not great

  • June Health and Human Service Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters that the Obama Administration was looking to have at least 7 million consumers enrolled in new health insurance plans by the end of March 2014.
  • December The White House has admitted that getting 7 million people enrolled by March 2014 is basically impossible, revealing that only 365,000 applications have been filed via Healthcare.gov during the site’s first two months of operation. That’s still not even 50 percent of the 800,000 people that the Obama Administration was hoping to have enrolled by the end of October. source

Legalized: The states of Washington and Colorado may be getting quite a bit of attention for passing legislation to legalize marijuana last year, but a different country is about to become the first in the world to legally protect its citizens’ right to consume, grow, and sell cannabis. Residents of Uruguay will soon be allowed to purchase up to 40 grams of marijuana per week month from state-run pharmacies, at just $1 per gram, or grow up to 6 plants of their own. The government has also given itself 120 days to create a regulatory body for privatized distribution. (Photo via Coleen Danger) source

No, the next Nelson Mandela of the world is rotting in a jail cell tonight, just like Mandela nearly withered for 27 years on Robben Island. Or he is on someone’s terrorist watch list, or she is segregated and searched every time she travels through an international airport. Somewhere, government spies are reading the emails of the next Nelson Mandela. They are tracking his cell phone and listening to his calls, or monitoring her meetings with their undercover cops.
Philly.com writer Will Bunch nails it on the head, discussing who could be the next Mandela for America or across the world.
