As a former resident of the Hampton Roads region, this was pretty much the worst-case scenario that could happen when living there. Quite scary. Glad to hear that there have been no fatalities thus far.
They were spending Thanksgiving with their father. Last night’s deadly plane crash in Superstition Mountains, a rugged patch of mountains east of Phoenix, was especially sad because of the time of year. Six people died, including three children and three adult men. The mother of the children, who was not on the plane, was notified by authorities late Wednesday. “The mother is a pilot herself,” noted Elias Johnson of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Department. ”She understands when a plane crashes at 230 miles an hour … directly into the face of the mountain … and when it’s a fiery crash,” the odds of survival are low. source
More details on Arizona plane crash: These come from Weather Channel executive producer Jesse Hamilton, who managed to get an official on air that said it was a small plane with six people on board. Rescue will be difficult as it happened over tough terrain. Details still coming out. (ht Matt)
The crash happened on rough terrain, making rescue tough. A plane crash in the Superstition Mountains, east of Phoenix, appears to have left a large explosion, based on the webcam video above (key moment 53 seconds in). Details are hard to come by right now. “We don’t know yet if it’s a passenger plane or a crop duster,” said Angelique Graham, the Pinal County (Ariz.) sheriff’s spokeswoman. “We can’t tell the size of the aircraft involved from the air and we can’t tell how many people may have been aboard.” Details are coming in as we speak. (Edit: Just got an update; the plane had three adults and three children on board.) source
Journalists were given a 20-minute tour of the crash site on Saturday where a plane dived into the crowd at the Reno air race one day before. The crash killed nine people and injured over 50.
The large crater we mentioned in our last post is very obvious here.
Ward Howes, the photographer who shot the moment-of-impact picture we reblogged last night, also shot a number of other photos in a series — it appeared he set his camera on sport photography mode and was able to tell a full story with his photos. We felt they’d make a good photoset to show all-in-one. The Reno Gazette-Journal has more photos of the crash. Thanks to our friend Megan Lavey for the tip. (Ward Howes via AP)

Unbelievable timing. This is soon to be an award-winning photo.
Nunavut plane crash: Here’s the spot where a chartered Boeing 737 plane crashed in the northern part of Canada. Reports say that 12 died in the accident, which required military helicopters and all-terrain vehicles to reach. “You could see parts of the plane everywhere … tail, nose everything,” said Saroomie Manik, a former mayor of Resolute Bay, a town with a population of just 229. To put it another way — when 12 people die in this remote area of the world, far closer to Greenland than Toronto, people feel it just a little bit more.
