I have given much thought to Richard Stoecker’s letter (“Vote for Mormon against beliefs,” June 15). I am also a Christian and differ with the Mormon religion.
But I think any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is a Mormon.
Editor’s note: To clear up earlier confusion, the News-Leader has verified the letter writer is the mother of actor Brad Pitt and local businessman Doug Pitt.
So hey, there’s that.
» Goal was to “transcend,” not “conquer” church: Former members of the LDS Church, after an increasing disagreement with church policies/opinions/explanation of its own history, signed the necessary letters of resignation over the weekend. While some people struggled with the decision to leave the church, others felt secure with their choice.

Before the Mickey Mouse Club discovered the now-ubiquitous actor/hunk/superhero, Ryan Gosling was a gawky Canadian kid with a horrible bowl cut who just happened to have some nasty dance moves. Here he is in 1991, melting hearts with this angelic cover of “When a Man Loves a Woman” and breaking it down to C+C Music Factory’s “Everybody Dance Now” with his sister, Mandi.
At one point he pushes his sister out of the way to upstage her. Top that.
Members of the Utah State Legislature tell FOX 13 they have received apocalyptic revelations from imprisoned FLDS leader Warren Jeffs.
The revelations have been arriving in lawmakers’ mailboxes all week. The mailings are similar to what Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff reported receiving earlier this week. They threaten God’s wrath upon Utah and other places. The mailings say that Utah and Arizona will be destroyed in an earthquake and a volcano; Idaho will be destroyed by fire; Seattle will be destroyed by a tidal wave; and the east coast will be wiped out by a tsunami — if Jeffs is not released from prison.
Tidal waves, tsunamis, volcanos, and earthquakes: Sounds like Harold Camping has some competition.
Someone had to say it. One minister’s words should not spark this much press.
A Texas jury Thursday found polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs guilty of two counts of sexual assault.
Jeffs was charged with sexual assault on a child after a 2008 raid on a ranch near Eldorado, Texas, operated by his church.
Jeffs, the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, represented himself in the trial, which started last week. He also faces one count of bigamy, and is expected to be tried on that charge later.
Warren Jeffs says something crazy: It’s a good thing God isn’t a judge, or that judge would be screwed.
