We’re not taking away anybody’s right to do things, we’re simply forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup.NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg • Speaking on MSNBC about his proposed ban on soft-drink containers bigger than 16 ounces. “The idea here is, you tend to eat all the food in the container in front of you,” he continued. “If it’s a bigger container, you eat more. If somebody put it in a smaller glass or plate or bowl in front of you, you would eat less.” For what it’s worth, many large food companies, such as Coke and McDonald’s, are on the attack in the wake of the proposed ban.

» That brings the grand total to $600 million: Michael Bloomberg’s spent hundreds of millions to fight smoking globally through his charitable foundation. The NYC mayor, who calls tobacco ”a scourge all over the world,” plans to use the money to fund legal challenges against smoking in low-and-moderate-income countries where smoking is widespread, including Russia, China and India. Bloomberg’s anti-smoking efforts in NYC (which included increasing cigarette taxes and encouraging directors not to film actors smoking in films) have met with success; the smoking rate has dropped in the city. Bloomberg might face trouble in China, however: Smoking is a very common part of socializing in the region and cigarettes cost less than a dollar a pack, and China relies heavily on tax revenues raised through packs of cigarettes.
The NYC mayor is the most prominent figure to come out against Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s decision to strip funding for Planned Parenthood, dropping $250,000 for the controversial group. “Politics have no place in health care,” he said in a statement. “Breast cancer screening saves lives, and hundreds of thousands of women rely on Planned Parenthood for access to care. We should be helping women access that care, not placing barriers in their way.” Bloomberg’s donation comes on top of $400,000 in donations to the group from individual sponsors and a harshly-worded statement to Komen from 26 Senators. » SFB said: Don’t read anything into the word “was” (regarding Jose Pimentel’s status as a U.S. citizen) other than us emphasizing that he isn’t strictly a citizen of the Dominican Republican despite being born there. We were just keeping up with a live stream. — Ernie @ SFB
And in case you missed it, here’s the embed of the press conference about the arrest of Jose Pimentel. (Thanks ABC News/KGO)
Michael Bloomberg’s sweater at the presser was a little … festive … tonight. Dude looks like he was totally screwed out of an early Thanksgiving dinner. (via Robert Hernandez on Twitter and Google+)
Here’s a photo of a simulation that the NYPD did to show what 27-year-old Jose Pimentel, a Dominican Republican-born so-called “lone wolf” and al-Qaeda sympathizer, reportedly planned to do to military and police officials. It’s the 14th such terror threat since September 11, 2001. He was is a U.S. citizen.

New York City is the city where you can come and express yourself. What was happening in Zuccotti Park was not that.Mayor Michael Bloomberg • Offering a tough take on Occupy Wall Street this morning, after a long night in which police randomly showed up at the encampment’s door and gave protesters 20 minutes to vacate. The mayor seemed to imply with his statement that safety concerns trumped First Amendment concerns, which is perhaps a dangerous take on the law. source (via • follow)
Occupy This Statue: 24-year-old Dylan Spoelstra (who’s gotten some press from Bloomberg for his role on Occupy Wall Street) climbed a statue early this morning, promising not to come down unless Mayor Michael Bloomberg resigned. After a couple hours, he relented. ”He’s not the sharpest knife in the draw,” said another protester, Pat Griese. “He didn’t seem drunk or high to me. He just seemed a little off.”
