A letter was intercepted at the Secret Service’s White House mail-screening facility on Thursday, after the deadly substance ricin was found in an envelope addressed to President Obama. Similar letters were sent to New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and Mayors Against Illegal Guns earlier this week, and the FBI is currently investigating possible connections between the letters. nycgov:

Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg visited Washington DC joined by Senator Charles Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to ask for fiscal help from the federal government for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
In New York City, the public and private losses caused by Hurricane Sandy, which were not covered by private insurance come to $15.2 billion.  New York City’s recovery is vital to America’s continued economic recovery and growth.
Read the Mayor’s remarks delivered yesterday at the U.S Capitol Building at http://on.nyc.gov/UdLnVc.

Highlight from the remarks: “We haven’t waited for the help that we hope to get from Washington to come, but given the scale and the impact of the storm, Federal assistance is clearly warranted.”

  • nine members of New York’s Board of Health voted to approve the ban on sales of sodas over 16 ounces. (They aren’t cola nuts.)
  • one member of the board abstained out of concern for the financial implications of the ban. (He wasn’t a Fanta the ban.) source

The Pitch, Week 7: A bunch of Juggalos and a ton of Paul Ryan
Seventh-inning Pitch: We’re here to serve you, folks. We SFB writers really enjoy writing the longer stories that are most important to you. The Pitch is a chance for all of us to delve a little deeper. Head over to this week’s The Pitch album on Facebook and vote for what story you want to see written slightly more longform-y! Your choices: The media’s coverage of Sarah Palin in comparison to Paul Ryan; a crazy new sci-fi technology developed by Microsoft and the NYPD; the Insane Clown Posse’s insane lawsuit against the FBI; a closer look at Paul Ryan and what makes him so Paul Ryan-y; or what to do with yourself now that the Olympics are over. Oh yeah: Be sure to read last week’s winner, a close-up on Syria. source

Michael Bloomberg’s sweater at the presser was a little … festive … tonight. Dude looks like he was totally screwed out of an early Thanksgiving dinner. (via Robert Hernandez on Twitter and Google+)
