70+ votes for immigration reform in the Senate? That sounds rather crazy, but John McCain thinks “it’s doable.” There’s a feeling amongst some of the senators working on the legislation that if the bill gains majority support from both parties in the Senate, the House won’t have any choice but to put it to a vote. We are skeptical that either of those things will happen, let alone both. source

Marco Rubio’s getting his ass kicked…He’s getting destroyed! By Mark Levin, by Rush Limbaugh, and a few others. He’s trying to find a legitimate, long-term effective solution to immigration that isn’t the traditional Republican approach, and talk radio is killing him.
GOP messaging guru Frank Luntz, in a secretly-recorded, off-the-record meeting with college Republicans. “They get great ratings, and they drive the message, and it’s really problematic. And this is not on the Democratic side. It’s only on the Republican side.” You may have seen Luntz conducting “focus groups“ of questionable authenticity on Sean Hannity’s show, but don’t let that fool you: He’s been one the most influential and respected messaging strategist in Republican political circles for the better part of the last decade. The footage was obtained by David Corn, who seems to have a knack for obtaining secretly recorded footage. source

One of the best ways to encourage growth is through our energy industry. Of course, solar and wind energy should be part of our energy portfolio. But God also blessed America with abundant coal, oil, natural gas. Instead of wasting more taxpayer money on so-called clean energy companies like Solyndra, let’s open up more federal lands for safe and responsible exploration.
Senator Marco Rubio, challenging President Obama’s call for green energy investment and call-to-arms on climate change. Obama actually did laud American energy production, oil and natural gas included, but this is one issue on which there isn’t much common ground between the two parties. As such, one man’s “investment” is another’s “waste.”

As you heard from him tonight, his solution to almost every problem is for America to tax more, borrow more, and spend more. …The idea that more taxes and more government spending is the best way to help hardworking middle class taxpayers – that’s an old idea that’s failed every time it’s been tried. More government isn’t going to help you get ahead. It’s going to hold you back.
Senator Marco Rubio, dismissing President Obama’s State Of The Union calls for investment and government reforms in the GOP response tonight.

There is no scientific debate on the age of the Earth, it’s established pretty definitively, it’s at least 4.5 billion years old.
Sen. Marco Rubio - During an interview with Politico’s Mike Allen, which briefly focused on comments the Florida Republican made during a GQ interview last month. Some were confused by the Senator’s answer when asked about the planet’s age, and many readers were left unsure as to exactly what the Republican believed himself. Rubio says he was simply trying to acknowledge those who have a hard time accepting data which seems to fly in the face of their religious teachings, but wanted to be clear that he knows there is “no scientific debate.”  source

I’m not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that’s a dispute amongst theologians and I think it has nothing to do with the gross domestic product or economic growth of the United States…I don’t think I’m qualified to answer a question like that. At the end of the day, I think there are multiple theories out there on how the universe was created and I think this is a country where people should have the opportunity to teach them all.
Sen. Marco Rubio • Answering a direct question on the Earth’s age during an interview with GQ’s Michael Hainey. We don’t expect the Senator’s comments to make my headlines on their own; however, the overall tone of the piece certainly seemed to have the air of a man testing the political waters for a spot on the Republican ticket in 2016. Then again, maybe we’re just overanalyzing. Thoughts? source

  • Gov. BranstadI don’t think it’s helpful. I guess my feeling is that we need to turn the page, and we need to focus on the future and not make excuses for the past.”
  • Gov. Jindal “We need to continue to show how our policies help every voter out there achieve the American Dream, which is to be in the middle class, which is to be able to give their children an opportunity to be able to get a great education. … So, I absolutely reject that notion, that description. I think that’s absolutely wrong.”
  • Gov. ScottIt’s wrong, it’s not true. What we’ve got to do is say we want every vote, we want to take care of every citizen in our state”
  • Sen. RubioI don’t believe that we have millions and millions of people in this country that don’t want to work. I’m not saying that’s what [Romney] said. I think we have millions of people in this country that are out of work and are dependent on the government because they can’t find a job.”
  • Sen. AyotteThe campaign is over and what the voters are looking for us to do is to accept their votes and go forward and we’ve got some big challenges that need to be solved. I don’t know the full context of them but I don’t agree with them.” source

A new face of the Republican party? With former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz pulling off a dramatic win in a runoff for a Senate seat on Tuesday, Cruz becomes just the latest example of the GOP’s increasing diversity. WIth a number of increasingly successful Republicans who aren’t white — including Cruz, Sen. Marco Rubio, Gov. Nikki Haley and Gov. Bobby Jindal, among others — the Republican Party may be slowly starting to break from the past. “In the 2016 or 2020 Republican presidential primary, it’s easy to see a contest that includes Jindal and Rubio in its top tier,” notes Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post. Not one, but two planes I was on today had malfunctions. Second one forced to make emergency landing in New Mexico. I know how to take a hint!
Sen. Marco Rubio • Took to Twitter to explain why he had to call into a Romney campaign event in Iowa from New Mexico. Rubio was supposed to make a speech on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa at a rally for Romney; his plane in Albuquerque had some kind of electrical problem. According to Atlantic Aviation, passengers “thought the battery was overheating and believed they saw smoke.” source (viafollow)
