RIP George McGovern: “We are blessed to know that our father lived a long, successful and productive life advocating for the hungry, being a progressive voice for millions and fighting for peace,” his family said in a statement. The liberal politician, who died at 90, was such a symbol of liberal politics that he had the word “Govern” right in his name. The South Dakota politician lost in the 1972 presidential election to Nixon, 520 electoral votes to 17, though Nixon’s streak of dirty politics showed up after the election in the form of the Watergate scandal. Today in car crashes that will be politicized: Former Rep. Alan Grayson, who spent two short, memorable years in Congress (though he’s hoping for a second chance), ran a red light with his Mercedes and hit a city bus Saturday. He was rushing to get to an upscale fundraising event. Two people on the bus got slight injuries; the police found that Grayson was to blame for the accident. As with everything he does, the reaction has been loud and uncompromising: Here’s a sample of the ways this is getting played so far.
Slate’s John Dickerson makes a boo-boo by accidentally including Bachmann spokesperson on email. Bachmann campaign manager responds (from Facebook):
Team—This is Keith Nahigian, Michele’s campaign manager. While Michele has been onstage at tonight’s debate demonstrating strong leadership on foreign policy and national security, we received concrete evidence confirming what every conservative already knows - the liberal mainstream media elites are manipulating the Republican debates by purposely suppressing our conservative message and limiting Michele’s questions.
View the attached email by CBS News’ political director from earlier today—we need to show the liberal media elite that we won’t stand for this outrageous manipulation. Help us fight this affront by sharing this with your friends.
Bad mistake, of course.
