  • $14.6 M in net income for Smith & Wesson in the third financial quarter, the results of which were released today — a quarter which included the tragic massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.
  • $4.4 M in net income for the company during the third quarter last year — meaning there’s been a tripling in income from one year to the next, broadly attributed to a rush of consumers fearing impending gun control legislation. source

From that day until now, I’m still in disbelief. I just feel like he’s away. He’s away. I mean, in actuality, I know that he’s not coming back. I’ve had people to die, pass away in my family. But the level that I’ve gone through with this is just, it just surpasses everything that I’ve been through. Not only because it was a sudden death. It was a minor. It was a teenager. It was a, you know, it was my baby.
Sybrina Fulton • Discussing what her life has been like since losing her son, Trayvon Martin, to gun violence after a scuffle with Florida resident George Zimmerman turned deadly. With Zimmerman expected to begin trial later this year, Fulton sat down with the Washington Post to give an update on her life and day-to-day mentality after losing her son. Martin died one year ago this weeksource

Gabby Giffords deserves a vote. The families of Newtown deserve a vote. The families of Aurora deserve a vote. The families of Oak Creek, and Tucson, and Blacksburg, and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence – they deserve a simple vote.
President Obama, urging congress—more specifically, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives, to put his gun control proposals to a vote.

I just want to say thank you. Thank you to everyone who had something to do with rounding her or having something to do with who she was.
Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, mother of slain Chicago teenager Hadiya Pendleton • Speaking at her daughter’s funeral on Saturday. Hadiya, who had performed at President Barack Obama’s inauguration just three weeks ago, was killed less than a mile from her home in a neighborhood park. First Lady Michelle Obama attended the teenager’s funeral, and many political figures, including the president and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, have offered support to Hadiya’s family. Her godfather, Damon Stewart, made an effort to emphasize that her life shouldn’t be used as a political tool, but that her loss, like those of many others lost by gun violence, should be personal in nature. “Don’t let this turn into a political thing. Keep it personal,” he said. “A lot of politicians will try to wield it as a sword. They want to use it for votes.”

I know most of you who personally know me are in disbelief to hear from media reports that I am suspected of committing such horrendous murders and have taken drastic and shocking actions in the last couple of days. You are saying to yourself that this is completely out of character of the man you knew who always wore a smile wherever he was seen. I know I will be villified by the LAPD and the media. Unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name.
Christopher Jordan Dorner • In a personal manifesto posted to Facebook shortly before he allegedly opened fire on three police officers. Gawker has posted the ex-cop’s entire manifesto, presumably given the likelihood that his Facebook profile will be taken offline soon, and has the whole document split into two sections for those interested in checkint it out. Hit the source link for part one, or click here for the second half of Dorner’s Anonymous and Charlie Sheen-praising manifesto. source

With the recent tragedy on everyone’s minds, some people are looking for a cause and culprit other than the shooter. Unfortunately some are blaming media, including video games, for violent behavior in individuals. We know this isn’t the case; banning or regulating media content even more won’t solve the issue.
Entertainment Consumers Association president Jennifer Mercurio •  Speaking on the recent meeting between Vice President Joe Biden and executives of major video game companies, as part of Biden’s task force on curbing gun violence. The video game industry, which drew blame from NRA chief Wayne LaPierre during his controversial post-Sandy Hook press conference, has pushed back rather firmly against the notion that their products bear any responsibility to America’s gun violence epidemic. source

I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people.
A message in the suicide note left by William Spengler, the man who attacked a group of firemen in Webster, NY on Monday. Spengler, 67, was known in the area for brutally murdering his grandmother in 1980, and returned to the neighborhood after he was paroled in 1998. He had done little to draw attention to himself since then. Authorities now report that they found human remains in the home set ablaze by Spengler — a home he lived at with his sister — though the identity of any victims has been unconfirmed. Spengler’s ambush attack on the firemen that came to stop the blaze was a rarity, as firefighters and emergency workers rarely deal with gun violence on the job. The firefighters killed include the Webster Police Department’s 43-year-old public information officer, Lt. Michael Chiapperini, and 19-year-old 911 dispatcher Tomasz Kaczowka.

What I’m struggling with is, is this the new social norm? This is what we’re going to have to live with if we have more personal access to firearms. […] We have a public health issue to discuss. Do we wait for the next outbreak or is there something we can do to prevent it?
Dr. Stephen Hargarten, emergency medicine chief at Froedtert Hospital and director of the Injury Research Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin • He’s of many experts who think gun violence is now a “social disease.” In light of the recent mass shootings across America, public health experts are now equating guns to “a virus, a car, tobacco or alcohol.” Instead of focusing solely on the shooters, experts want a “science-based, pragmatic approach based on the reality of a society saturated with guns and seek better ways of preventing harm from them.” source (viafollow)
