Such offensive epithets would no doubt draw wide-spread disapproval among the NFL’s fan base. Yet the national coverage of Washington’s NFL football team profits from a term that is equally disparaging to Native Americans.
A letter, signed by ten members of Congress, asking Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder to change the team’s name, saying it’s a derogatory term towards Native Americans. The team has repeatedly said that they do not consider the name offensive, and have no plans to change the name. Polling on the football team’s name favors keeping it in place. The effort was led by Rep. Eni F.H. Faleomavaega, the congressman for the American Samoa.

NFL star and current Pittsburgh Steeler Plaxico Burress, who once shot himself in the leg with a 9mm pistol (and faced felony weapons charges, and eventually a prison term, as a result), is big on socks. So big that he started his own line of luxury socks. Complete with photos of models wearing striped socks. “An avid collector of luxury socks, Plaxico found himself always looking for the ‘perfect sock,’” the website claims. “Often, he would love the design, but not like the fit. Or he would like the fabric/material, and not like the length.” Plax loves his socks.

Power goes out in Superdome, delaying Super Bowl XLVII in 3rd quarter
(Photo: AP)
NEW ORLEANS - Baltimore didn’t lose any momentum from an extended halftime.
Jacoby Jones took the 2nd half kickoff back 109 yards — setting an NFL record — to extend the Baltimore Ravens’ lead to 28-6 early in the third quarter.
Then the Superdome lights went out. Officials are still working to restore power to the stadium.
Read the complete story.

The third quarter is usually when things get boring anyway, so it’s probably a good thing that they shut off the lights.

One of the nice things about the CBS Sports player for the Super Bowl? It has an all-22 view, which means you can see what every player is doing all at once. Switching angles on the fly is pretty rad.

Superbowl Sunday Presidential Trivia
Did you know that Gerald R. Ford received offers from two professional football teams, the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers?
He chose instead to take a position as boxing coach and assistant varsity football coach at Yale hoping to attend law school there.
In his youth, Jerry earned “All-City” and “All-State” honors at South High School in Grand Rapids before joining the team at the University of Michigan as a center. Ford won the Meyer Morton Trophy, awarded to the outstanding freshman player in spring practice, in his first year as a Wolverine. He made the varsity squad the next year and in 1934 he got the starting position. Although he had high hopes for his senior year since the team won the national championship in both 1932 and 1933, injuries hit the offense and the defense struggled. “We lost seven of our eight ball games,” Ford later reflected on his final season at Michigan. “But what really hurt was that my teammates, after the end of the season, voted me the most valuable player. I didn’t know whether to smile or sue.” (ARC Identifier 186975)

Gerry Ford’s presidential library is the best. As is that man’s hair.

A visual comparison of every jumbotron in the NFL

Cowboys Stadium currently boasts the largest jumbotron in the NFL — a behemoth of an LED measuring 160 feet wide and 72 feet tall — but how does Dallas’ Texas-sized display compare to the rest of the NFL’s set ups? That’s the question that graphic designer Daniel Beaton set out to answer with a straightforward infographic.

The Vikings’ jumbotron is basically a 27-inch TV.

Christmas gifts: Top this one, kids wanting to impress their parents

This dad, a massive University of Alabama fan, got a great gift from his kids … a hat modeled after legendary Crimson Tide coach Bear Bryant’s. But it was what was under the hat — a ticket to the BCS championship game between the Tide and Notre Dame — that truly was worth a huge freakout. Reaction? Priceless. (ht Hypervocal)

  • 7 NFL players have reportedly turned their legally-owned firearms over to team security officials, with at least one apparently claiming he no longer trusted himself to keep them. Scrutiny of athletes’ gun ownership continues, following the murder-suicide carried out by Javon Belcher last weekend, though not all of the those being watched appreciate the extra attention. “Just because we’re in the NFL, that doesn’t make us no different,” said Chiefs defense tackle Shaun Smith. “You never know when someone would try to rob you.” source

Our cover story today: Why do so many NFL players own guns?

Not that it’s not a clever treatment, but should it really be pointed at a football player?
