Facebook Timeline of the Day: Ernie Smith, the founder of ShortFormBlog, a breaking news website, stole a (Facebook) page from the New York Times and its terrifically detailed timeline, spending a month or so with illustrator Ben Claassen III to create a backstory for the “face” of the blog, Julius the laid-off RSS robot. Says Smith: “It’s as though Julius is at the forefront of publishing, even if he kind of fails along the way.”
Not to be missed: Julius gets scooped by Drudge in the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

From the ShortFormBlog vaults, circa 1903: Regulatory questions raised at first flight
One of the few newspapers in the world to be at the scene of the Wright Brothers’ first human flight, Dr. Julius Zwee, as Zweibel liked to be called, nearly prevented the flying machine from getting airborne as he drowned Orville and Wilbur Wright in questions regarding security regulations. He specifically questioned the lack of bureaucracy that followed the work of the early entrepreneurs. In his article on the phenomenon, Dr. Zwee correctly predicted that we’d all have to take off our shoes before taking flight on such contraptions in the future.
Editor’s note: This is a story from the illustrated Facebook timeline of our site’s 113-year history. Haven’t read it yet? You should!

Sharing your posts on Facebook just got a billion times better, with integration into Facebook’s Timeline, News Feed, and Ticker.
New options include:
Toggle “Send to Facebook” when posting.
Share Replies on your Facebook Timeline.
Share Likes on your Facebook Timeline.(They even get lumped together so they’re not overwhelming!)
You can find the new options in your blog settings. If your blog is already connected to Facebook, you’ll be automatically prompted to upgrade.

This is badass. Great work, Team Tumblr! It’s moves like this that make WordPress.com utterly irrelevant.

Smart move by Tumblr. The real problem with sharing FB posts in the past is that they got too heavy on the page, loading the pages with clutter. This really helps matters a lot.

Facebook rolling out timeline for brand pages, available to all by March 31 http://tnw.to/1DUtl This is the preview we just got

I feel like this will encourage us to put more work into the thing. Esp. Like the fact that static FBML pages are now full-frame.

So, we kept a little mum on yesterday’s big changes with Facebook, in part because our day was extra-packed, but we gotta say … wow, that seems to have lived up to the hype. (We were skeptical the night before, esp. after Ben Parr’s fawning article on Mashable) The new Timeline feature will take some getting used to, but the big difference this time is that Facebook isn’t just pushing pixels around (which seemed like the modus operandi for most of their redesigns) but actually reinventing things. And, as a Washington Post Company employee when not blogging here, I just gotta say … wow. The Social Reader, built from Trove’s humble beginnings, is easily the best piece of software the Post has ever created. Seriously, you should check it out. — Ernie @ SFB
