Behold the “Empowered Man,” the latest entry in a series of paintings by conservative artist Jon McNaughton. McNaughton has painted similar scenes to this one before – he has a whole set of anti-Obama paintings (such as this one, in which he sternly torches the constitution), in addition to a couple that advocates of church/state separation might find a bit irksome. Of particular note, in addition to the fact that McNaughton does quite well by these works (he expects to rake in between $50,000 and $100,000 for the above canvas), guess who his “most prominent” patron is? If you guessed Fox News host Sean Hannity, well, you’re right. Though that really was too easy.

So why has he struck such a chord among GOP voters and progressives alike? Why have videos exposing his racial biases and anti-gay attitudes gone viral and inspired hashtags? It’s simple: Even in a recession, social issues like sex and race are extremely resonant. And Santorum is the only candidate talking about them.
Good Magazine Associate Editor Nona Willis Aronowitz • Opining on exactly why Rick Santorum made a comeback in an era where his brand of social conservatism was starting to look old-hat. Essentially, because he’s the only person seriously discussing these issues, he stands out. But it goes further, Aronowitz notes: “The Santorum hubbub is a reminder that the issues we hold dear — issues of sex and race and civil rights — are absolutely recession-proof.” (Related: This Patch video, in which a heckler asks Santorum if he would abort a gay baby. Ah, campaign trail politics. Thanks John Ness for that tip.) source (viafollow)

think-progress:

Check this out: “Progressive” is viewed more positively than “conservative” and every other political label in America.

The real question: Should we get beyond labels and start focusing on views? It’s a pitch that’s been floating around a little while.

joshsternberg:

Slate’s John Dickerson makes a boo-boo by accidentally including Bachmann spokesperson on email. Bachmann campaign manager responds (from Facebook):

Team—This is Keith Nahigian, Michele’s campaign manager. While Michele has been onstage at tonight’s debate demonstrating strong leadership on foreign policy and national security, we received concrete evidence confirming what every conservative already knows - the liberal mainstream media elites are manipulating the Republican debates by purposely suppressing our conservative message and limiting Michele’s questions.
View the attached email by CBS News’ political director from earlier today—we need to show the liberal media elite that we won’t stand for this outrageous manipulation. Help us fight this affront by sharing this with your friends.

Of course, the comments….

Bad mistake, of course.

The Tampa Tribune explicitly advertises itself as a conservative paper: Well, that’s one way to compete with the St. Petersburg Times. As Saint Petersblog puts it: “The direct mailer from The Tampa Tribune just about eliminates any pretense of straight reporting, advertising the newspaper’s ‘fiscal conservatism.’” It’s not often that the local paper straight-up points out their political lean, a method usually seen more with cable news than local news. (h/t Charles Apple)

I don’t think that taking to the streets and rioting and disorder has ever solved anything. Or ever will.
Ronald Reagan (source: HBO documentary “Reagan”) … wow. Really?

Liberal in Bed, Conservative in the Head

Breitbart is my hero.

Just got a kick out of this video, admittedly. The line that evilteabagger mentions is at the very end. But overall this clip does a pretty good job of portraying the more socially-accepting/libertarian end of the CPAC audience.

If you’re like us and do searches for newsworthy political topics on YouTube every once in a while, you might run into this guy. This guy, a conservative, likes yelling really quickly. it’s his whole schtick. Here, he’s yelling about Keith Olbermann. He’s like a combination of Billy Mays (God rest his soul) the Micro Machines guy, and Rush Limbaugh. Mostly Rush.
