Comedy Central has decided not to renew the series. The second half of season 7, beginning June 19th, will be its last.Comedy Central’s EVP of Programming Dave Bernath views the network’s decision as “the natural end” to the show’s improbable comeback. “That’s a helluva run that few shows achieve, and especially given the fact that it came back to life, it’s really an amazing story,” he says. “I’m more thankful and feel a sense of gratitude toward the whole process — and that we found a way to keep going for 52 more episodes — than I really am even thinking about the ending. It’s a blessing that it came back and lasted so long.”
Good quote by David X. Cohen in this: “I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news. It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.”

Worth pointing out, though, that one of Viacom’s ways of attacking DirecTV, a Pop Up Video mocking a statement by DirecTV’s CEO, no longer works; it was taken private last night. A deal in the works?

We have been very willing to get a deal done, but Viacom is pushing DirecTV customers to pay more than a 30 percent increase. The fights aren’t new but the stakes have been raised of late. Just last month, for example, Dish Network had to drop AMC Networks in a similar dispute. However (despite declining radings), Viacom’s networks are much bigger and the resulting loss of content will be tough for subscribers to stomach. “It has been inconceivable that any distributor could drop Viacom’s networks, mostly because of Nickelodeon,” analyst Todd Juenger wrote in June. “But ratings are down, often significantly, at networks representing 71 percent of Viacom affiliate fees.” Anyone here a DirecTV subscriber? Sheen is a pretty big get for the cable net and most definitely a step up from Kid Rock.
The Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen will air at 10/9c on Monday, Sept. 19 — which just so happens to be the same night Ashton Kutcher makes his debut as Sheen’s replacement on Men.
Though they will air on the same night, a wise move by Comedy Central, Two and a Half Men returns at 9 pm, an hour before the roast.
Brilliant counter-programming strategy.
Jon Stewart on “Fox News Sunday”: Bro had to take some tough questions from Chris Wallace, who took the opportunity to dump some fairly strange clips on Stewart. Come on, what was up with the Comedy Central clip? Stewart, as always, defended himself reasonably well. We like Chris Wallace generally, but we don’t know if this was one of his better moments.
