Daily Beast media writer Howard Kurtz tries to expose a major hole in the Jason Collins story, fails miserably, gets called out for it on Twitter. Fun.
digg:
“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay,” - Jason Collins
“The recent Boston Marathon bombing reinforced the notion that I shouldn’t wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect. Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully? When I told Joe [Kennedy, a Massachusetts congressman and Collins’ college roommate] a few weeks ago that I was gay, he was grateful that I trusted him. He asked me to join him [at Boston’s gay pride parade] in 2013. We’ll be marching on June 8.”
Shown The Door: Rutgers University has announced that men’s basketball coach Mike Rice will no longer work for the school as a result of a video which emerged on Tuesday. The footage, apparently captured during the basketball team’s practices, shows the former coach becoming physically and verbally abusive with Rutgers players. Rice’s firing was announced on the school’s Twitter account. (Photo via ESPN) source
If she is the best on the board, I will take her.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is considering drafting Baylor women’s basketball star Brittney Griner. (via andrewgraham)
Griner would love the opportunity. “I would hold my own! Lets do it.” she wrote on Twitter on Tuesday night in response to Cuban. (via apsies)
This could be really awesome.

Michigan State has a higher seed than Michigan. All is right with the world.
He said, ‘If you can Dennis, I don’t want to do war, I don’t want to do war.’ He said that to me.Dennis Rodman, playing diplomat between North Korea and the United States on ABC’s “This Week.” The Worm suggested that common ground could be met on the basketball court. ”He loves basketball,” Rodman said, referring to Kim Jong-un. “I said, ‘Obama loves basketball.’ Lets start there.”
Dennis Rodman is in North Korea for “sports diplomacy,” a trip that actually garnered a “no comment” from the State Department. Fantastic.
Dennis Rodman’s contribution to diplomacy: Teach Kim Jong-Un how to rebound.
Jerry Buss, the longtime owner of the Los Angeles Lakers who proved a major force behind the team’s success, has died at the age of 80. ”I really tried to create a Laker image, a distinct identity,” Buss said of his team. “I mean, the Lakers are pretty damn Hollywood.” Buss’ Lakers were by far the most consistently-successful team in the NBA during the 34 years he owned the team, winning 10 championships since 1979, most recently in 2010. Roughly a month after he was traded to the Lakers, former Orlando Magic superstar Dwight Howard pulled out the ol’ full-page-newspaper-ad thing to tell his former fans how much he loves them. Not everyone’s a fan, however …
A shooting at a famed basketball court: Six people were treated for gunshot wounds last night after a gunman opened fire on a basketball court at Harlem’s famed Rucker Park. During a lull in the game, while players and coaches argued mid-court, a suspect in the crowd pulled a gun and opened fire. Six men were wounded, five on the court and one across the street, but all victims are expected to fully recover from their injuries. No word yet on a motive, and no arrests have been made at this time. (Photo via SportsGrid) source
Errrrrr…The “kiss cam” at last night’s USA-Brazil Olympic exhibition men’s basketball game found itself locked on Barack and Michelle, they declined, were booed, and it was awkward for everyone involved (Malia, Joe Biden, the Secret Service, and certainly the operator of the “kiss cam”). The second try went much more according to plan, but was probably still pretty tense for the “kiss cam” operator.
Now the real question: Would Mitt Romney do this?
He’s managed to stay out of trouble for almost two years, but Marcus Jordan finds himself back in headlines after his weekend booking for obstruction, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. Jordan was in Omaha to support a high school friend and his training partner during the 2012 Olympic Swim Trials. While we think the college athlete is certainly under more scrutiny than most, because of his relation to one of basketball’s all-time greats, do you think Marcus’ history of questionable decisions will prove to be an issue if he hopes to join the NBA? Kevin Garnett has reportedly decided to re-sign with the Boston Celtics when NBA free agency begins on July 11th — a 3-year contract (Garnett is 36), meaning he’ll likely retire as a Celtic. Yahoo’s Marc Spears reported the deal as being worth $34 million over those years, a premium price tag for somebody Garnett’s age, and that price tag gives the lanky power forward a unique distinction — it would make him, over his entire career, the highest paid player in basketball history.
