Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the “Facebook phone,” a customization product for Android devices, at the company’s Menlo Park headquarters today. Called Facebook Home, Zuckerberg said it is “a family of apps and you can install it and it becomes the home of your phone.”
Would you let Mark take over every aspect of your phone? (Side note: There is a phone too, the HTC First, which includes this deep Facebook integration right out of the box.)
Growing Family: Even though today’s Android event was cancelled, Google went forward with product announcements for the LG Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 tablet via the company’s blog this afternoon. The company also revealed an upated 32GB Nexus 7, the 32GB Nexus 7 with mobile data, and Android 4.2 in the post. source
Congratulations to the team at Nik Software on their recent acquisition by Google. We’re curious to see how this will affect development of Snapseed, as well as the rest of Nik’s software catalog, and whether or not this might bring an end to some of iOS’ most popular photography apps. source
Speaking of Flickr, time for an update on the the Popular Cameraphones chart:
1) iPhone 4S
2) iPhone 4
3) iPhone 3GS
4) iPhone 3G
5) Samsung Galaxy S II
The good news: Android is finally on the verge of overtaking an iOS device on the chart.
The bad news: this iOS device is four years old. It’s so old, in fact, that the iPhone 3G was taken off the market by Apple a year ago. Yet there still isn’t a single Android device that can pass it on this chart. Pretty pathetic.
The other bad news: the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 are so far ahead of the rest of the cameraphone pack that it seems highly unlikely that any Android device will come close anytime soon. In fact, they’re the number one and number two cameras used to take Flickr photos, period. Not smartphone cameras — cameras, cameras.
The really bad news: the new iPhone is a month away.
But on the other hand, we’re talking about the Android community, where there are so many varieties of phones out there that it’s possible that if you combined them all together, it might be a different picture. The reason why the iPhone and iPhone 4S models rank so high on this chart is because of lack of splintering … right?
BlackBerrys were in fact considered in the survey but given very few respondents reported being a BlackBerry user, their numbers were not statistically relevant. Of those considering themselves smartphone owners, only 9 percent reported being BlackBerry users.Tucked away in this Obvious Survey is Obvious post over at POLITICO, which shows President Barack Obama has a commanding 49-31 percent lead over Mitt Romney among iPhone/Android users, is one of the saddest statistics about Research in Motion we’ve ever come across (via hypervocal)

Meet Cid, the new mascot for CyanogenMod, the mega-popular Android ROM. The team unveiled the new mascot as part of a rebranding campaign, of sorts, as the team rolls out some major changes with its upcoming distribution CyanogenMod 9. Based on the Android 4.0 kernel, CM9 will mark a departure from the team’s previous use of app-launcher ADW and the stock Music app in favor of internally developed replacements. The Verge also reports that there is talk of creating a Cyanogen App Store, which would offer apps not sellable on Google Play, as the team works towards creating a full-fledged OS of their own. After a two-year wait, nostalgia-driven Android users who own devices running Android 2.2 or higher, can finally join their iOS brethren on popular photo-sharing app Instagram. Initially released for the iPhone in 2010, Instagram’s Android release comes only a week and a half after the developers opened a waiting list for users who wanted to know as soon as they could get their hands on the software. The company says over 400,000 joined the list, which certainly sets high expectations for its official release. So, do you plan on downloading Instagram? source
