Intelligence: Osama bin Laden targeted Amtrak on 9/11 anniversary
- On September 11th, 2001 A major attack coordinated attack on the U.S. — involving the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a foiled third location — left the country in a state of shock and led to the War on Terror, the hunt for Osama bin Laden (which just ended in spectacular fashion), and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security.
- On September 11th, 2011 Reportedly Osama bin Laden had a second act, involving the Amtrak system, according to documents found in his hideout. “We have no information of any imminent terrorist threat to the U.S. rail sector, but wanted to make our partners aware of the alleged plotting,” said the DHS’ Matthew Chandler. » Some quick thoughts: The U.S. passenger rail system, while not nearly as robust as that in Europe or the rest of the world, nonetheless is widely used along the East Coast in particular. While perhaps not the strongest target of attack, the rail system has nowhere near the level of security that airline system does — making it a much easier target for attack. We wonder what this means for the rail system — an army of TSA agents at Penn Station?
