Our hearts still ache for the futures snatched away, the lives that might have been — the parents who would have known the joy of being grandparents, the fathers and mothers who would have known the pride of a child’s graduation, the sons and daughters who would have grown, maybe married and been blessed with children of their own. Those beautiful boys and girls just beginning to find their way who today would have been teenagers and young men and women looking ahead, imagining the mark they’d make on the world.
President Obama • Speaking at today’s 9/11 memorial event at the Pentagon, the site of 125 of the nearly 3,000 deaths by terrorist attack twelve years ago today. Obama also memorialized the four Americans slain during the September 11th attack in Benghazi, Libya last year — the same city in which a Libyan Foreign Ministry was stricken by bombing today. source

There are specifics — in that sense it was credible — but there’s no certitude. There’s no smoking gun, but we do have talk about using a car bomb.
Vice President Joe Biden • Speaking on the credible terror threat this morning while on “Good Morning America.” He was slightly less vague than Michael Bloomberg was last night. NYC and DC have upped their security ahead of the 9/11 anniversary as a result of the threat, which up to this point has proven incredibly vague. Let’s hope that, whatever it is, authorities have their ducks in a row. source (viafollow)

Intelligence: Osama bin Laden targeted Amtrak on 9/11 anniversary

  • On September 11th, 2001 A major attack coordinated attack on the U.S. — involving the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a foiled third location — left the country in a state of shock and led to the War on Terror, the hunt for Osama bin Laden (which just ended in spectacular fashion), and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security.
  • On September 11th, 2011 Reportedly Osama bin Laden had a second act, involving the Amtrak system, according to documents found in his hideout. “We have no information of any imminent terrorist threat to the U.S. rail sector, but wanted to make our partners aware of the alleged plotting,” said the DHS’ Matthew Chandler. Whoa. source

» Some quick thoughts: The U.S. passenger rail system, while not nearly as robust as that in Europe or the rest of the world, nonetheless is widely used along the East Coast in particular. While perhaps not the strongest target of attack, the rail system has nowhere near the level of security that airline system does — making it a much easier target for attack. We wonder what this means for the rail system — an army of TSA agents at Penn Station?
