An anti-Romney coalition? What’s going on here? Are Newt and Rick plotting to somehow stop Romney from winning the nomination? We’re not entirely sure they could do this, other than by winning the rest of the primaries (and even that wouldn’t guarantee it). Then again, delegate allocation is an extremely messy, complicated process that’s fully understood by approximately six living individuals. Still, this one has us scratching our heads. Maybe they were just discussing the new season of Mad Men?
Let’s just be honest…I’ve yet to meet a single person in the Republican establishment that thinks Mitt Romney is going to win the general election this year. They won’t say it on TV because they’ve got to go on TV and they don’t want people writing them nasty emails. I obviously don’t care.Joe Scarborough • This particularly smarts, as Scarborough is a former Republican congressman himself. source (via • follow)
“We’re here today, and he’s not.” Rick Santorum appeared outside of the Supreme Court on Monday, after oral arguments for the upcoming Affordable Care Act hearing. Santorum claimed that he was the only candidate capable of repealing Obama’a health care law, saying that even if Mitt Romney wanted to, “he won’t have the mandate through the course of this campaign.” (Mitt’s staff has refuted this.) We guess he forgot Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul were still running.
Senator Santorum is becoming increasingly shrill as his campaign hopes fade. It’s important that all Republicans keep their focus on President Obama because if we want to repeal Obamacare we need to defeat him first.Romney spokesman Ryan Williams • In an email to Politico, responding to Rick Santorum’s claim that he is the one person capable of ensuring that “Obamacare” is repealed. Santorum appeared outside of the Supreme Court on Monday, after oral arguments for the upcoming hearing on the Affordable Care Act, in an effort to bolster his image as an opponent of President Obama’s signature legislation. source (via • follow)
» Not quite as much as 2008, though: Four years ago, Obama’s donation prowess was a little stronger: He raised $56 million in February 2008. This decline is to be expected, however, due to “donor fatigue” and the slow economy.
My 12-year-old will out-reason Bill Maher when it comes to understanding, you know, what, you know, how logic works because he is completely illogical.Rick Santorum • Rebuking another round of criticism from television host Bill Maher, during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity. During his show on Friday, Maher claimed Santorum wanted his children “locked up in the Christian madrassa”, because in public “they could be infected by the virus of reason”. When asked about the comments Santorum replied, “all of a sudden, if you’re instilling faith and teaching them about God in your home, you’re a madrassa, according to these folks.” The Arabic word roughly translates to “school”. source (via • follow)
I wanted a brokered convention. That was one of my goals.Michael Steele • Discussing his role in the length of the current GOP primary season, and his thought process for scheduling primary contests during his time as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Steele has come under fire recently for creating a primary season that, by many accounts, appears to be benefiting President Obama far more than the Republican Party. Steele stuck by his decision-making, arguing that the longer primary season could re-engage Republican voters in states that have been largely ignored in previous contests. source (via • follow)
Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry, running mates? That’s a rumor that’s been floating around (based on this report), but both sides deny it, with Gingrich spokesperson R.C. Hammond saying “any sort of talks along those lines would be premature” and Perry spokesperson Catherine Frazier calling it “humbling but premature.” Funny, we’d argue it’s too late to have these kind of discussions. Could the primaries in Mississippi and Alabama be the beginning of the end for the social conservatives? Polls show a resurging Newt Gingrich could potentially upset rivals Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney in two key upcoming primaries. If Gingrich loses in Mississippi and Alabama he’d likely have to drop out, greatly increasing Santorum’s chances against Mitt Romney. But if he wins, Gingrich and Santorum would continue to compete for the social conservative vote, potentially tanking either candidate’s chance of upsetting current front-runner Mitt Romney.(photo via Politico) source
I didn’t sit on a couch with anybody.Rick Santorum • Speaking at a campaign event at the USS Alabama Battleship Park, during which he also proudly declared that global warming “is not climate science, it was political science.” The couch line was a reference to a 2008 video that his opponent, Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, did with the then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi on climate change. Gingrich was not the only target of Santorum’s speech, the candidate quickly reminded those in attendance that Mitt Romney imposed the nation’s first CO2 cap during his time as governor. “We don’t need somebody who changes when the climate changes,” Santorum said, “We need somebody who looks at science with a clear head and a level eye.” source (via • follow)
Maybe more supporters than Santorum? Andrew Card, the former chief of staff for George W. Bush, said this earlier this week: “I have the perfect candidate — Jeb Bush. But he’s not running.” Even Democrats believe that Bush could be a threat if he uses his sway with middle-class and Latino voters. Could the former Florida governor with an impressively presidential bloodline be the Republican Party’s ace in the hole? Or will he wait until 2016? source
» A massive financial mind share: That’s almost $1 out of every $4 collected by all super PACs this election cycle, and certainly seems to explain exactly how we ended up with the remaining crop of Republican candidates that we have. Bob Perry is a former Tim Pawlenty supporter who switched to Team Romney with a $1 million dollar donation, while the Adelsons — who are ready to boost their support for Winning The Future from $10 million to $20 million — have provided the lifeblood of the Gingrich campaign. Of the remaining four candidates, only Rick Santorum finds himself without support, via Super PAC donations, from one of these five wealthy conservatives.
Anybody who’s afraid of debating Newt Gingrich isn’t going to be in very good shape to debate Barack Obama.Newt Gingrich • Campaigning in Peachtree City, the Atlanta suburb he represented in Congress for twenty years. The GOP presidential candidate mocked his rivals for pulling out of a CNN-hosted debate scheduled to occur just days before Super Tuesday. Both Mitt Romney’ and Rick Santorum’s campaigns announced that they would be skipping the debate, leading the network to drop their coverage. Ron Paul’s campaign announced that Dr. Paul would be withdrawing as well a short time later. Romney’s campaign cited a busy schedule as it’s reason for skipping the debate, but Gingrich challenged the assertion saying, “you can’t hide behind millions of dollars in negative ads and think you’re going to win the presidency.” Let’s be honest with ourselves, though, Newt — there have been so many debates that even the presidential candidates are getting sick of them. Make it stop! source (via • follow)
