Offbeat: Man gets shot, eats lunch, seeks help (in that order)

  • action A New Haven, CT man was shot in the groin shortly after purchasing a sandwich. He was shot twice, and the hospital was only a block away…
  • reaction …but the man was hungry! He went home, finished the sandwich, got a ride to the hospital, and recovered quickly (probably thanks to the sandwich). source

U.S.: Discovery Channel Building hostage-taker shot, killed

  • the hostage situation that began earlier today at the Discovery Channel Building in Silver Spring, Maryland has been resolved. James Lee, the hostage taker, was shot by police at 4:50 pm and taken into custody shortly thereafter. The three hostages are all safe and uninjured. Crisis averted! (Update: Lee has died from his injuries.) source

U.S.: Holy crap: Officials shoot and kill fugitive bear from helicopter

This bear attacked an old guy at Yellowstone, so authorities took to a helicopter and shot it to death. It was the first bear mauling around the park in 25 years. source

U.S.: Courtroom chaos: A judge attacked, a defendant shot dead

  • Whoa! That’s crazy! What happened? During a murder trial in Stockton, Calif., the defendant, accused of murdering his girlfriend, apparently became agitated and attacked the judge during a recess, called after the defendant’s mother stormed out of the courtroom. David Paradiso started punching the judge, and deputies shot at him, killing him. Whew. Talk about scary. source
