Chatter: Max Headroom: John Avlon’s a crackpot, according to crackpots

  • Pot, meet kettle While Harold Ford, Jr. is guilty of nothing but idiocy, it’s certainly a symptom of what is leading to the insane controversy around New York Gov. David Paterson. Ford says Paterson should resign. Because, clearly, Harold Ford Jr. is the right guy to offer this advice.
  • Not very expert-like On “Fox News Sunday,” Chris Wallace deservedly calls neocon icon Bill Kristol an expert at Iraqi foreign policy when asking who he thinks the U.S. would prefer as prime minister. Kristol’s answer? He doesn’t know. Way to prove your theory wrong, Chris.
  • “Hatriot” Games One of Anderson Cooper’s guests in the wake of the Pentagon shooting, John Avlon, came up with the term “Hatriot” to describe the crazy cropping up. Irony: Avlon is being called a crazy by the 9/11 Truther movement, despite making sense in this clip.

Tech: Sun Microsystems CEO tweets his resignation, haiku-style

  • Today’s my last day at Sun. I’ll miss it. Seems only fitting to end on a #haiku. Financial crisis/Stalled too many customers/CEO no more
  • Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz • In a tweet about his last day at the tech company, which was recently swallowed whole by Oracle. Schwartz, who shows creativity even in defeat, is the first Fortune 200 CEO to ever tweet his resignation. Seems fitting for a tech CEO to go out that way. source

Chatter: Janet Napolitano resignation calls are getting louder, bipartisan

  • We should have someone who doesn’t need to go in there and learn about terrorism, learn about security. How close were these 300 people on this plane from losing their lives because homeland security broke down? Boy, it was really close.
  • New Jersey State Senate President (and former governor) Richard Codey • On his feeling regarding Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. Codey feels that the former Arizona governor isn’t a good fit for the post, in that she doesn’t have a background in security. Many Republicans feel the same way (and have been criticizing her for months). Now, we don’t think it’s gotten this bad yet, but the building bipartisan support should give the Obama administration pause. source

Culture: Why is Urban Meyer leaving Florida? It comes down to his health.

  • I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family.
  • Florida football coach Urban Meyer • On his reasons for resignation. Meyer is one of those workaholic guys who eats, sleeps and breathes football, something his wife would try to do everything to help work around. But Meyer has also had some significant health problems – he was diagnosed with an arachnoid cyst on his brain in 1999, which is about as scary as it sounds. Many fans are largely supportive of his decision, as sad and shocking as it is to the ultra-successful Florida program. source

World: An Afghan airstrike leads top German minister Franz Josef Jung to resign

  • He’s the third top official to resign this week. Jung and others were under pressure after a September attack in Afghanistan killed civilians. It came out in local newspaper Bild that Jung and others likely knew of the civilian casualties from the point it happened. Those who resigned all assumed responsibility for the attacks. source

U.S.: Not a good month to be an Obama staffer tied to Gitmo

  • first Gregory Craig, who was in charge of policy for detainees, left the White House. Time has a great article about his downfall here.
  • second Phillip Carter, a Defense Department official in charge of closing Guantanamo, resigned for “personal reasons.” Hmm. source

U.S.: Protip from Van Jones: Don’t call Republicans names

He got caught calling Republicans #(&^@(^@. Now he’s gone. Van Jones, a White House adviser on environmental issues, had both his radical past (he used to be a Marxist) and name-calling history (see the video) catch up with him in recent weeks. The result? The man is out of a job. It’s telling, by the way, that he was a constant target of Glenn Beck – it’s proof that Beck actually has significant influence. source

U.S.: Mark Sanford: You South Carolina sons of #(^@&! are stuck with me

  • I’m not going to be railroaded out of this office by political opponents or people who were not fans of mine in the first place.
  • South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford • In remarks regarding his status in office after Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer (who, like Sanford, is a Republican) pushed for the governor to resign. We wish that the lieutenant governor were Andre Braugher. He’s a great actor, not a guy plotting against a governor who hasn’t broken any laws. • source
