Chatter: Gavin Newsom puts his left foot in, puts his left foot out, puts his…

  • … left foot in, and he shakes it all about. The San Francisco mayor is doing the hokey pokey, with his political ambitions, reportedly announcing he’s running for lieutenant governor of California months after dipping out of a gubernatorial bid. Beyond being a less glamorous job, his dip-out from before gives his primary opponent, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, an obvious thing to attack him on. She’ll say, “Oh, he’s indecisive!” Just wait for that. We gave you a preview of the primary. source

U.S.: Houston mayor-elect Annise Parker carries the gay-rights torch, too

  • Houston is a multiracial, multicultural, international city. And I think my election will send a message to the world that Houston is a city that might surprise a lot of folks.
  • Houston mayor-elect Annise Parker • Discussing her sexual orientation (she’s gay), along with the possibility of being the new mayor of Houston, prior to a runoff election that she won. This is a big deal for a number of reasons. First off, Houston is the fourth-largest city in the country, which means that it’s the largest city in the country to elect a gay mayor. Secondly, it was in a city which just a few years ago barred benefits for partners of same-sex workers. Finally, Texas is a really conservative state. So her election is a huge win for the gay rights movement. source

Chatter: Rudy Giuliani knocks White House “over-concern” for 9/11 terrorists

  • Both in substance and reality, the war on terror in their point of view is over. There seems to be an over-concern with the rights of terrorists and a lack of concern with the rights of the public.
  • Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani • on the White House’s decision to try 9/11 terror suspects in New York City instead of elsewhere. Giuliani, of course, was the mayor during 9/11 and the initial recovery, and his words have a lot more heft in this conversation as a result. • source

U.S.: Gavin Newsom: Not the next governor of California. By choice.

  • With a young family and responsibilities at City Hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to – and should be – done.
  • San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom • Describing his reasons for no longer running for governor of California. It was a sudden drop-out, one precipitated by Attorney General Jerry Brown’s staggering lead over him in the Democratic primary. The center-leaning Newsom tried really hard to replicate Obama’s social-networking success but couldn’t pull it off. Too bad. Seems like he would’ve been a good governor based on his success in the Bay Area. • source

U.S.: Milwaukee proves that pipe beatings are making a comeback

That’s what made Milwaukee famous? The mayor of Milwaukee learned last night that doing nice things for people can end up in tears. After chilling at the Wisconsin State Fair, Mayor Tom Barrett heard a woman screaming, and went to help her. Instead, he got beat by a man with a lead pipe. What is this, River City Ransom? Barrett was in stable condition in the hospital, while the 20-year-old who did this to him was arrested. You know, we could use fewer pipe beatings, not more. source
