Tech: New Twitter iPad app blows every other Twitter iPad app away

  • Even though we’ve felt like Twitter’s official iPhone app (formerly Tweetie) has been overrated to some degree, we can’t say the same thing about Twitter’s official iPad app. It’s got this magical ability to be as simple or as complex as you’d like it to be, and that’s really hard to pull off. Layers can hide as necessary as the content requires. Links are done in a way that feels intuitive, and it could even teach Flipboard some things about elegance, which is saying a lot. Let’s just get it out there now: We’re fans. Nice work Atebits. source

Chatter: Glenn Beck’s “The Blaze”: Well, the design is kinda cool

  • Credit where credit’s due: The Blaze, clearly Glenn Beck’s attempt at a Huffington Post-style site, has a design that tops pretty much every site of its kind out there. HuffPo is an exercise in throwing a ton of crap on a single page. The Daily Caller, while it had an engaging pitch at launch, definitely had a by-the-numbers design that looked out of date before it had ever heard of Journolist. The Blaze, while sticking with WordPress, has a downright elegant, photo-heavy, type-focused look. Too bad it’s as adversarial and divisive as Beck can be. source

Tech: Foursquare isn’t doing too bad considering, y’know, Facebook Places

  • cause Facebook launched its Foursquare-aping “Facebook Places” feature, leading many to claim that the service was going to die soon. Because that’s what Facebook does. They rip off other services.
  • effect Instead, Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley tweeted this: “Just heard from The @HarryH that today was @foursquare’s biggest day ever in terms of new user signups.” Hmm. Interesting. source

Tech: iPhone launch report: A lot of scattered, potentially serious issues

  • Be it yellow residue that hasn’t completely dried or antennas that aren’t working very well, a lot of new iPhones have been having some pretty bad issues at launch. And it’s something that could cause Apple to lose a little of its luster if it proves to be too bad or too serious. Apple’s allowed a rough launch every once in a while. OK? source

U.S.: Obvious: Space shuttle launch delayed by some weather problem

  • So, why do we launch space shuttles out of Florida, anyway? NASA’s Shuttle program may be coming to a close in the near future, but while they’re still happening, they’re keeping up a common trend – a delayed launch. With just 40% of launches happening on time, it’s more common for a ship to be delayed by weather than not. And Florida kinda has a lot of it. Anyway, the Endeavor was delayed again this morning. By what, you say? Clouds. source

Tech: Reuters’ redesign is one of those designs that starts slow, gets better

Screen-shot-2009-12-05-at-10.11.32-AM

  • The interesting thing about Reuters’ redesign is the same thing that’s interesting about “All My Friends” by LCD Soundsystem: It starts out not looking like much, but as you get further down the page you realize that there’s a ton going on here. That’s how it starts, the way it does in bad films. Except the part where the motor kicks in. source
