This line of arguing is downright strange for a lot of reasons, the biggest being “The Twinkie Defense,” which was used by the lawyer for Dan White, who was charged with killing gay-rights icon (and recent biopic subject) Harvey Milk. U.S.: California’s next assembly speaker is blazing Harvey Milk’s trail

Democrat John Perez is in line to be the first gay assembly speaker, anywhere, ever. Perez won a show of support from the California state assembly today – a big deal, as that position holds a lot of power. Perez will be on the front lines of the state’s budget crisis, which is expected to last until at least – get this – 2015. He also has a pedigree, too: His cousin is Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was also an assembly speaker back in the day. Good for you, bro. source

U.S.: Obama hands out Presidential Medal of Freedom to 16 famous peeps

Talk about vip. Obama announced the 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom today. Among those to get America’s highest civilian honor: Stephen Hawking, Ted Kennedy, Harvey Milk and Sidney Poitier. I know, right? Pretty exclusive. We have to keep working on that cure for cancer, then maybe we’ll have a chance. source
