Tech: Probe: Blame design flaws, not just BP, for Gulf Oil Spill

  • Hey, let’s not forget about this: A report compiled by risk management firm Det Norske Veritas on last year’s oil spill in the Gulf came out today. (They were hired by the federal government, not BP, by the way.) They claim that design flaws scuttled the blowout preventer; as the well lost control, the drill pipe bent and buckled, which blocked the shear rams. Shear rams are the means by which the blowout is supposed to be prevented, as they’d cut through the drill pipe to safeguard against the well’s pressure level. Sadly, these sort of industrial fail-safe systems don’t always work as well in reality as in theory. source

U.S.: Remnants of Gulf Oil Spill (remember that?) still hanging around

  • Fun fact about the Gulf Oil Spill: A few days ago, the federal government said there were only a few “trouble spots” where oil was still hanging around. Strangely enough, this photo of a miles-long oil spot was taken after they said that. Wonder what happened. source

U.S.: Oil spill sketchiness: BP is buying silence from Gulf scientists

  • We told them there was no way we would agree to any kind of restrictions on the data we collect. It was pretty clear we wouldn’t be hearing from them again after that. We didn’t like the perception of the university representing BP in any fashion.
  • University of South Alabama head of marine sciences Bob Shipp • On BP’s desire to work with the university. Work with the university? For what, you ask? Well, they wanted to offer lucrative pay – and a big contract – to the school’s marine scientists. But at a major cost. Basically, the scientists could not publish or even speak about any of their data for the next three years. Long story short: They said no. But not every scientist was willing to bend – scientists at Louisiana State University, the University of Southern Mississippi and Texas A&M reportedly said yes. Unbelievable. And right after this mess. (Thanks Charles Apple – again!) source

U.S.: The Gulf oil spill has a new cap, but will it stop the massive leak?

  • good Our good friends at BP have put a tighter cap on the well, with the goal of stopping the oil leak altogether.
  • bad Oh, there’s between 89 million and 176 million gallons of oil that have already leaked over 83 days. (Just sayin’.) source

U.S.: OH CRAP. Could Tropical Storm Alex hit the oil-soaked Gulf?

  • Well, this looks promising. The first named storm of the Atlantic’s hurricane season just broke out, and guess where it is? That’s right, in pretty much the worst possible place for a storm to be this summer. Nothing like oil, wind and water mixing. source

World: Old Chinese dude gets hopes up over Obama automated letter

  • The end of the letter was actually signed ‘Barack Obama.’ I hope this letter can be kept forever.
  • Chinese man Li “Old Li” Liangzheng • Discussing the response he got from the Obama administration about his response to the oil spill. What kind of response was it? An automated one. While Old Li reportedly had a decent idea – it involved a large lid to equalize pressure – the response has perhaps been a little, unexpected. His response has been feted by the Chinese media over the last week. Which, let’s admit it, is kind of hilarious. source
