Tech: Consumer watchdog group to Google CEO: Don’t be creepy

  • Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said some pretty weird crap lately. He thinks you should be able to change your name as an adult. He suggests that you shouldn’t say certain things online if you don’t want them to get out there. And it’s got consumer groups pretty concerned. We don’t think Schmidt is anything other than a weird dude, but this clip makes him look like the second incarnation of Chucky from “Child’s Play.” Is it really this bad? Really? source

Tech: Thanks to Google’s Eric Schmidt, our name is now Jim-Bob

Apparently Schmidt recently suggested that teen may have to change their names as adults to avoid getting nailed for the stupid crap they did. No words … source

Offbeat: Tit-for-tat: Google makes Topeka’s name their own

  • In fact, Topeka Google Mayor Bill Bunten expressed it best: ‘Don’t be fooled. Even Google recognizes that all roads lead to Kansas, not just yellow brick ones.’
  • Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt • In a post describing the company’s decision to change their name from Google to Topeka. The yearly April Fool’s joke is a homage to Topeka, Kansas, which symbolically changed their name to Google last month in an attempt to become part of the company’s trial super-fast broadband program. On the plus side, at least someone’s called Google still. (In other other news, it’s April Fool’s Day and Justin Bieber isn’t a father.) source

Biz, Tech: Google: We made it through the worst of the ad slump just fine

  • The worst is behind us. We’re clearly seeing aspects of recovery, not just in the U.S. but also Europe.
  • Google CEO Eric Schmidt • Speaking to room full of journalists about the state of his company. He says that his company has started to hire again in anticipation of a major rebound. Big question: Will newspapers recover along with Google? • source

Biz, Tech: Who didn’t see this comin’? Google’s CEO resigns from Apple’s board

  • That Google Voice thing must not have helped. Google CEO Eric Schmidt is saying “peace out” to Apple’s board, where he was increasingly seen as a weird fit. Between Google Android, Chrome OS and now the Google Voice debacle, the company has been encroaching on some of Apple’s territory. While Schmidt excused himself from discussions pertaining to products that carried “conflict of interest” baggage, there’s only so many of those discussions one can excuse yourself from before it seems weird. Wonder what Fake Steve has to say about this. source

Biz, Tech: Google’s CEO sez Microsoft is just making noise with Bing

  • It’s not the first entry for Microsoft. They do this about once a year. I don’t think Bing’s arrival has changed what we’re doing. We are about search, we’re about making things enormously successful, by virtue of innovation.
  • Google CEO Eric Schmidt • Who says that, despite Bing’s early popularity, they’re not a threat and will “evolve to a different strategy” that won’t affect Google. In other words, MS is rattling their cage again and not really hurting anyone. • source

Biz, Tech: Google CEO Eric Schmidt thinks newspapers need more innovation

  • innovate Schmidt spoke at the the Newspaper Assn. of America conference yesterday, where he told his audience, “You can architect a structure where innovation is welcome, and where it’s taken advantage of.” (In other words, don’t lay people off!)
  • aggregate Schmidt also told the audience that the AP’s crazy plan to piss off their customers wasn’t going to work. Information doesn’t flow that way, so putting it back into the bottle isn’t going to work. He suggests embracing the aggregation instead. source

Tech: We want you to help newspapers, Google. Thanks for the thought.

  • We’d like to help them better monetize their customer base. We have tools that make that easier. I wish I had a brilliant idea, but I don’t.
  • Eric Schmidt • Google CEO, on the company’s desire to help newspapers get out of their funk. He means well, grizzled old journos. • source
