Culture: BBC host Ray Gosling turns his life inside out on “Inside Out”

  • Well, that was a bit unexpected. Ray Gosling, the host of BBC show “Inside Out,” claimed that he killed his very sick AIDS-stricken gay partner on last night’s show. And now police are investigating his claims, which he laid out in great detail. Assisted suicide is illegal in the U.K., by the way. source

U.S.: Did you know HIV-positive people couldn’t enter the U.S. for 22 years?

  • If we want to be the global leader in combating HIV/AIDS, we need to act like it.
  • Barack Obama • Describing his decision to turn over a 22-year-old ban on HIV-positive people entering the country. Just a dozen countries had the ban, which sounds like it was put in place at the height of misinformation and hysteria about the disease. While we’re glad it’s getting overturned, it’s a sad statement on our country that the ban existed in the first place. • source

World: Discrimination against AIDS is still alive and well in Vietnam

  • We survived the French bombings and the American bombings … I’d rather be bombed to death than die slowly of AIDS.
  • Nguyen Thi Thuoc • Thuoc, a 70-year-old Vietnamese woman, kept her grandchildren out of school because of 15 new students who were HIV positive. Discrimination against the HIV-positive is widespread in the country; this is just one example. “You can have wonderful policies and wonderful legislation,” notes Vietnam UNICEF representative Jesper Morch, but without a the right education campaigns, “you’ll have trouble enforcing them.” • source

U.S.: A teen injected with HIV (by his dad!) as a baby defies the odds

  • I expect to break the barriers between what people think this virus is, and what it really is. I hope to eliminate a lot of ignorance and change people’s minds.
  • Brryan Jackson • On redefining what AIDS is to the average person. Jackson is graduating high school today, but he was not expected to live nearly this long. The 18-year-old went through a harrowing experience as a baby: His father, Brian Stewart, who initially denied paternity, did not want to pay child support and worked in a hospital where he pulled blood from patients, injected his then-11-month-old son with HIV-tainted blood. Which is why he’s currently serving life in prison. Jackson’s done well, considering what his dad did to him. • source

World: Everyone thinks the Pope is wrong about condoms

The Vatican’s position
Pope Benedict, who made the comments yesterday, was apparently keeping the party line more than anything else, according to the Vatican. So, basically, if the Pope doesn’t believe condom use is bad, he just lied straight-faced.
Criticism is high
From medical doctors, who claim the Pope’s statement “represents a major step backwards in terms of global health education,” especially in Africa, to AIDS activists, not many people are supporting his position here. source
