In a story heavy with tragedy and political conflict, Marlise Muñoz, right, was taken off of life support on Sunday, after a conflict between her family and the hospital that was taking care of her. At the center of the fight: Muñoz was 14 weeks pregnant when she was brought into the hospital after suffering from an embolism. The family wanted to remove her from life support; the hospital said it could not, as the pregnancy still had the potential to reach viability, requiring the patient to be kept on life support under Texas law.
In the past week, word came out that the fetus suffered from deficiencies, and a court ruling ordered the hospital to remove the mother from life support, saying the hospital was applying the law incorrectly. “May Marlise Muñoz finally rest in peace, and her family find the strength to complete what has been an unbearably long and arduous journey,” the family’s lawyers said regarding the case.
