I reject her philosophy. It’s an atheist philosophy. It reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview. If somebody is going to try to paste a person’s view on epistemology to me, then give me Thomas Aquinas. Don’t give me Ayn Rand.Rep. Paul Ryan • Distancing himself from the late author and philosopher, whom he once called “the reason I got involved in public service.” Indeed, Rep. Ryan’s affinity for Ayn Rand has not been a secret through the years — he once spoke at an event honoring her (at the aptly named Atlas Society) and stated that almost every issue he faced in Washington represented a struggle between “individualism versus collectivism.” He told the Weekly Standard back in 2003 that he gave copies of Atlas Shrugged as gifts to his interns, and made them read it — or tried to, at least. So, basically, the guy is pretty into Ayn Rand. Awkwardly, Rand was a vehement atheist, however, a divergence from modern conservative culture that can make Republican opinion on her devotees unpredictable. It’s over this particular faith issue that Ryan seems to be brushing dirt on his old inspiration. source (via • follow)
