Wind-whipped Colorado wildfire forces evacuations

» Seven square miles and growing: Authorities in Jefferson County have already issued nearly 6,500 pre-evacuation notices to homes north of the present evacuation area. While the precise cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacki Kelley acknowledged that the county had run a controlled burn in the same area last week, which may have flared back to life. Despite an extremely snowy February, March has been unseasonably dry in Colorado, leading to increased risk of fire – a dozen smaller fires have also been reported from north-eastern Colorado, down to the south.
