Trayvon Martin: Neighborhood watch captain claims self-defense in teen’s death
- cause A few weeks ago, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was watching the NBA All-Star Game with his father and soon-to-be stepfamily (who live in a gated community outside Orlando) when he went out to get snacks at a local convenience store.
- reaction The neighborhood watch captain of the gated community, George Zimmerman, allegedly called 911 believing Martin to be suspicious. Before police could get involved, a fight started; Zimmerman later shot and killed Martin.
- result Zimmerman hasn’t been arrested; some (including a lawyer for the family) suggest racial profiling. The 911 tapes haven’t been released out of fear it might bias witnesses, but may be next week. The family has sued to hear the tapes. source
