Biz, Politics: Editorial: Carmakers could have pulled the electric trigger long ago

  • In Michigan, we are doing everything we can to become the home of this new electric auto industry – and to the jobs this industry will create.
  • Gov. Jennifer Granholm • On the rebuilding of the industry that’s the cornerstone of that state. GM had a chance to do the electric car right and a captive audience, and they limited its appeal and let it die. It seems like a sad commentary on our country’s priorities that it takes near-bankruptcy to convince the auto industry to properly give electric cars an actual shot. • source

GM made a huge mistake when they let the EV a car in high intrest and demand Die. Makes me wonder what would have happend had they allowed the EV become the success it was fated to be, perhaps they wouldent be in the situation they are in today. Now they are trying to make the Volt a sad excuse for an electric car that will only get 40 miles on a charge with a back up gasoline generator to create electricity after the 40 miles are reached and at a ticket price of over $40,000 expected will be out of reach of most consumers. The EV1 got 160 miles per charge and was full electric no gasoline used at all. Perhaps a part of GM’s restructering is a requirment that chevy bring back the EV. Still allow them to make the volt for those who want a torquer ride. Also the goverment should help give money to Tesla motors who is planning to put a plant in california to create its electric cars in the US for the US but has had to delay that plan due to the current economy.
