Music, Politics: Speaking of charity lunches, Billy Corgan is regretting his

  • I was surprised to see a minor detail I was unaware of that said the winner must pay the bill at lunch turn into an attack on me and my supposed fortune. What an @$$hole I am to not want to buy lunch?
  • Billy Corgan • Regarding the hate he’s facing from some corners of the Interweb because the winner of a charity lunch with the Smashing Zwankin has to pay the check. (Which we kind of agree is bull.) He goes on to say that he thinks it’s kind of unfair that he’s seen as a bad guy for attempting to do a noble thing, just because he’s been perceived as being a jerk in the past. How come you have to write a long rant instead of coughing up $50 for a meal, dude? At least split the check. • source

I think you missed the “Yes I’m being sarcastic but the sad part is someone out there will read this and think the worst, never seeing the darkness and avarice in their own heart… ” part of his message. He also updated the auction to say “Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins will treat the winner and their guest to lunch in LA or Chicago”.

Saw that part just fine. Chose not to focus on it. Just seems silly that he has to write a long rant to tell people, “no really, stop looking at me as a jerk and the Internet brings the worst out of people.” The fact of the matter is, unlike Trent Reznor, who worked hard to gain respect on the Web, Billy just hasn’t given us a good reason to not look for the alterior motive in everything he does. From the recent tour where he didn’t play the hits to going in front of Congress for reasons that were clearly in self-and-major-label-interest, he hasn’t earned our trust as fans.

Which is why an argument like this rings hollow. We’ll support you if you give us something to grab onto that’s reasonably positive.

BTW, good for him for changing the auction. See, that’s a start.
