  • terrible When Google launched its Nexus One, it forgot to offer something obvious it usually doesn’t offer for its products – live phone support. Users loudly complained.
  • better Google just started offering it, over a month after they launched the freaking phone. About time. It only covers status and shipping issues, though. WTF, guys? source

Tech: 4chan blocked by Verizon Wireless. Will they ever learn?

  • You just don’t block 4chan. You just don’t. Back in July, the site – which revels in offensiveness and the more controversial end of free speech – was blocked by AT&T over reports of a denial of service attack, later found to be caused by a “network error.” The case with Verizon Wireless, however (which doesn’t affect landline DSL connections, by the way), was based on content. Site owner moot was told the site was “explicitly blocked” by the company. Net neutrality was created for this reason, guys. source

Tech: Facebook as news source: The danger of getting news from friends

  • Facebook is a unique and wonderful artery to our friends’ lives and interests. But if we define our reading by our friends’ libraries, we will all find what we already expected rather than what we need to know.
  • Atlantic writer Derek Thompson • Regarding recent reports that Facebook has become a primary source of finding news for many people. He brings up a good point, one that news like this only emphasizes: With the change in journalism to something suggested to us by friends, all cookies instead of a well-balanced meal, we end up limiting our information to what we want to know rather than what we need to know. And, considering how often it shows up in politics already, that’s pretty dangerous. source

Tech: Google underestimates the uses of Chrome’s “Incognito Mode”

  • For times when you want to browse in stealth mode, for example, to plan surprises like gifts or birthdays, Google Chrome offers the incognito browsing mode.
  • A note on the Google Chrome help page • Regarding the site’s incognito mode, which allows one to hide their browsing habits from their cache. This is hilarious, because everyone knows the feature’s in there to hide people’s porn browsing habits. It’s possible, though, that the surprise gift might be porn. source

Tech: TechCrunch proves that tech gossip blogs have ethics, too

  • In some way or another, a line was crossed that should have never been. At this time, I do not want to go into details, but I will publicly say that I am truly sorry to my family, friends, TechCrunch, and especially the tech community.
  • Former TechCrunch writer Daniel Brusilovsky • Regarding an ethical error he made as an intern for the site. TechCrunch reports (in an apology) that Brusilovsky reportedly tried to barter coverage on TechCrunch on multiple occasions, which is a definite no-no when it comes to journalistic behavior. TechCrunch chose not to reveal his name at first due to his age, but Brusilovsky apologized for the matter himself. Good idea. source

Tech: Jesus hell, Facebook, another goddamn redesign? Aargh.

  • Happy sixth birthday dudes, but for the love of God, stop it. In the past, we’ve been for Facebook’s constant push to innovate, but it seems like they’re redesigning again just because. We’re sure it’s powerful and does a lot of cool stuff, but your last redesign was plenty useful. There seems to be no reason to screw with it again so soon. This hits 80 million users tonight, by the way. source

Tech: Former VP: Microsoft’s shooting itself in the foot, big time

  • What happened? Unlike other companies, Microsoft never developed a true system for innovation. Some of my former colleagues argue that it actually developed a system to thwart innovation.
  • Former Microsoft Vice President Dick Brass • On why Microsoft’s internal structure is hurting its abilities to create future innovations, forcing them to coast on prior victories such as Windows and Office. Basically, he claims that there is a strong system of corporate competition in the culture, one that has the effect of stifling innovative ideas. Their successes led to them limiting risk. He knows, because he was pushing e-Books and tablet PCs years ago, long before Apple made a big deal about it. One of his team’s most innovative ideas, ClearType, was prevented from being fully implemented in Windows for years because other teams held it back. These sorts of image issues don’t help Microsoft’s long-term cause. source
